Families spark Easter getaway growth
Bookings for foreign family Easter getaways are up by over 18 per cent, according to figures from The Co-operative Travel, one of the UK’s largest travel retailers. The year on year data also shows that Sharm El Sheikh has beaten Tenerife to become the most popular Easter holiday destination.
The popularity of the Easter holiday – a perennial family favourite - has increased compared to this time last year in line with the widely held view that families are now more optimistic about the economy and less frugal with their disposable income.
Bookings for Sharm El Sheikh have increased by over 63 per cent, knocking Tenerife – which grew by over 17 per cent - off its place as the number one Easter destination, a position it has held since the rapid rise of European package holidays in the 1970s.
Trevor Davis, director of retail distribution at The Co-operative Travel says, “The growth in Easter bookings, up by 18 per cent, is a real result for the travel industry but also an interesting social trend, as holidaymakers are clearly feeling more confident and dipping into their disposable incomes and booking breaks in the sun.
“Often the Easter holiday is supplemental to the main summer break, meaning that families might be treating themselves to an extra holiday this year.
“Sharm El Sheikh beating Tenerife as the number one Easter destination is equally fascinating. Tenerife has become more than just a holiday resort and is an iconic part of British culture - as emblematic as fish and chips, pubs and tabloid newspapers. The rise of Sharm El Sheikh shows how British tastes are changing.
Growth in Sharm El Sheikh is partially linked to the decline in the value of Sterling against the Euro, which has hit record lows, resulting in holidaymakers looking for greater value from their spending money.
Other reasons for the destination’s success is the low cost of package holidays, which despite increasing recently is still relatively low, allowing families to fly further afield. Sharm El Sheikh has also been developing its infrastructure, facilities and other tourist attractions, making Egypt’s appeal much greater.”
