Shearings Group invests for expansion

Shearings Group has invested a further £10 million in a new fleet of coaches to cope with increased demand for its coach holidays and better cater for its recently expanded European offerings.

The new order for 45 Setra coaches from manufacturer EvoBus marks the second major investment from the coach operator this year, following the purchase of another 45 Setra coaches in April.

All of the vehicles are powered by Euro 5 Mercedes-Benz engines, which are environmentally friendly, modern and reduce emissions.

30 of the new vehicles are tri-axle, and are 13.2m long which allows for increased luggage, higher passenger numbers and a more comfortable journey. 20 of these Shearings coaches have 52 seats, while 10 “Grand Tourer” coaches have 48 seats, allowing for increased legroom.

National Holidays has also purchased 15, 12m double axle coaches which feature 48 seats.

Shearings Chief Executive, Denis Wormwell, said: “We have been delighted with the coaches delivered earlier this year. By investing in this new fleet of 45 Setra coaches, our aim is to provide an even more pleasurable experience for our customers as well as continuing to develop our coach offering across the group.

“The new vehicles are amongst the newest and greenest in the UK, and, by carrying more people per journey we are reducing overall emissions.

“We are also happy to be making another major investment in a key asset in the current economy, sending out a strong message about the group’s ongoing success.”

Shearings has recently expanded its offering for 2010 with 12 new European itineraries including Inclusive breaks to Lake Garda, tours to Austria and Lake Como and new short breaks to Northern France and Belgium. The operator has also expanded cruise offering and now offers 34 river cruise holidays and 23 sea cruises.

Shearings were winners of Best Coach Operator in the Globe Travel Awards 2009, Best Escorted Tours Operator in the British Travel Awards 2008 and 2009.

The holiday operator has also been named the number one provider of river cruises by the travel agent readers of Travel Bulletin.
