Survey reveals busy mums are stuck in a dated recipe rut

Over three quarters of mums* are stuck in a food rut, rotating the same, limited number of recipes again and again - meaning many children aren’t getting the varied diet they could.

79% of mums recently surveyed owned up to having less than six recipes in their cooking repertoire, with a staggering 99% admitting that they usually rely on the same meals they had as children, rather than trying something new.

Despite the fact that nearly half of mums said that nutrition is their top priority when deciding what to serve up for dinner, less than a third have tried turning to recipe books to provide guidance on new dishes they could try. Even celebrity chefs aren’t providing the right inspiration – only 16% of mums have given one of their recipes a whirl themselves.

Princes, who commissioned the survey, is reminding families that putting together interesting and healthy meals needn’t be difficult.

Ruth Simpson from Princes said: “Busy parents seem to struggle to come up with a wide variety of meals that are both healthy and taste great, but there are plenty of healthy cupboard staples you can stock up with to ensure that you’ve always got the makings of a meal to hand.”

The survey also revealed that:

- 25% of parents surveyed said that they regularly rely on their child’s school or nursery to provide them with a healthy meal so they don’t have to worry about putting together a nutritious meal themselves

- Only 9% of mums rely on meals prepared by their husband or partner

- Geordies are the least celeb-influenced - only 3% of mums in the North East have tried their hand at a celebrity chef’s recipe

- Efficiency is key, and East Midlands mums seem to be the most rushed - 37% of those surveyed in this region say their top priority when it comes to coming up with meal ideas is that it can be prepared quickly
