NFB launches new tender advice line as competition intensifies

The National Federation of Builders (NFB) has responded to mounting pressure on small and medium sized contractors with the launch of a new ‘Bid to Win’ member advice line.

The new helpline will offer free expert advice to members preparing pre-qualification (PQQ) documents and tender responses as competition for new work continues to intensify.

Overall construction sector output fell by 18 per cent in the last quarter of 2008 compared to the same period in the previous year according to the most recent figures from the Office of National Statistics.

The NFB’s advice lines – which provide professional assistance to members on issues ranging from restructuring to technical issues - have grown in popularity during the last 12 months with over 1,900 more calls last year than in 2007.

The advice line is part of a wider package of services the NFB has launched, including a PQQ and tender submission review service, each designed to help members win work
The Federation has partnered with consultancy Evolution-IP which is led by Vassos Chrysostomou – a pioneer of applying the Egan Report in practice at BAA during the 1990s.

Evolution-IP works alongside a number of public and private sector construction clients, such as local authorities and Lloyds TSB, to develop contractor procurement frameworks.

Julia Evans, chief executive of the NFB, said: “Complex PQQ and tendering procedures are a huge burden to smaller contractors who lack the time and resources that larger firms can devote to complete.

“The popularity of our existing advice lines has shown that our members value access to expert guidance on a range of matters, and these new services have come at a time when pressure is mounting on their businesses every day.

“We’ve been working with Evolution-IP for a number of years and believe their construction client focused background gives them an ideal perspective from which to advise our members.”

The NFB represents over 1,500 builders and contractors across England and Wales. In addition to providing specialist advice and business services, the Federation, with a network of eight regional offices, lobbies local, national and European government on a range of issues to sustain positive trading conditions for members.
