National body backs Wirral recycling website

A Wirral-based construction firm - which set up an award winning website to help builders to recycle their surplus materials - has received backing from leading industry trade body the National Federation of Builders (NFB).

BuilderScrap (builderscrap.com) was set up by Les Owens, managing director of the Trustland Group - a 36-year-old family firm – after he recognised the amount of waste being thrown into skips on building sites that could be used elsewhere.

The website - which recently won the prestigious Green Apple Award for Environmental Best Practice - is free to use and allows contractors to advertise leftover material online, or take a picture and text it via a mobile phone.

The NFB - which represents over 1,500 SMEs across England and Wales - will help promote the site to all of its members to encourage sustainability within the construction industry.

The company launched the site at Interbuild – the industry’s largest building show – proving its viability by creating the stand from recycled materials such as over-ordered carpet, timber and office partitioning.

DEFRA statistics show that over 90 million tonnes of construction and demolition waste is produced each year in England and Wales - making up approximately 25 per cent of total waste. At least 13 million tonnes of this is said to be surplus, new material or second hand product which could also be recycled.

Founder Les Owens - who has been president of the Liverpool branch of the National Federation of Builders (NFB) for the past three years - used the organisation’s databases to carry out the necessary research and gauge the general opinion of relevant people in the industry.

Les said: “As a builder myself, I understand the time and financial constraints waste management can have on a project which is why we have designed the site to be completely builder-friendly.

“Being a member of the NFB has been fundamental in helping us set up BuilderScrap, which already has 160 users with the numbers just increasing. Their help lines have provided us with invaluable support and information to ensure we are aware of any changes in legislation affecting the construction industry.”

Marie Hill, regional director for the NFB said: “Our industry has an important role to play in helping to tackle the challenges of sustainability and finite natural resources. As a Federation we are committed to supporting initiatives like BuilderScrap as they are a great example of an NFB member responding positively to these challenges.”

In addition to providing specialist advice and business services, the Federation, with a network of eight regional offices, lobbies local, national and European government on a range of issues to sustain positive trading conditions for members.
