Harrogate contractor goes 'under the hammer'

A Harrogate-based contractor is looking to make a substantial profit from land bought on BBC One’s property auction show, Homes Under The Hammer.

Managing director of Derry Construction Ltd, Shane Derry, won the garden plot in Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire last autumn. The BBC will be back to film the three bedroom bungalow he’s constructed on the site when the project is completed later on this year.

In the current economic climate, auction houses have become the perfect place to secure a bargain, with the firm securing the plot of land for £50,000 - an impressive £10,000 less than the guide price.

Shane has been a member of leading national trade body the National Federation of Builders (NFB) since 1995, and has used their range of professional services to help him develop Derry into an established North Yorkshire contractor.

Shane said: “The NFB has supported my business’ growth through its range of services on offer. The training programmes the NFB provides has been vital to help equip me with the tools to complete projects like this.

“When undertaking this type of a development, it is very important that we are only a phone call away from quality, free advice to make sure we get the best return on the land that we’ve bought. I have found the guidance we’ve received from the NFB invaluable – especially the use of their legal advice lines.”

Marie Hill, regional director for the NFB, said: “There are still opportunities for enterprising firms like Derry Construction to prosper, even during these difficult times. As a Federation we are keen to lend our support to new projects, and the auctions are proving to be a great way for local firms to grab a bargain.”

The NFB represents over 1,500 builders and contractors across England and Wales. In addition to providing specialist advice and business services, the Federation, with a network of eight regional offices, lobbies local, national and European government on a range of issues to sustain positive trading conditions for members.
