Meadow Foods scoops top award

Pamela Harrison, operations manager at Chester-based dairy ingredients business Meadow Foods, has secured the title of FoodNorthWest’s Industry Rising Star of the Year.

The award was made after Pamela introducted new farmer payment systems and quality control procedures following Meadow Foods’ acquisition of West Lakes Dairy Park in January.

The systems, which went live in April, have already resulted in quicker payments for farmers and cut man-hours spent monitoring the location of each and every milk delivery.

Having previously worked for West Lakes Dairy Park, Pamela moved from Cumbria to Chester following the acquisition, which doubled Meadow Foods’ milk field to almost 400m litres overnight. At Meadow she was tasked with consolidating the two companies’ farmer payment systems and will also review new ways to increase business efficiency on an ongoing basis.

Paul Deakin, managing director for Meadow Foods, explains: “Cost pressures are a real issue for everyone in the dairy business this year so we are always looking for new ways to ensure maximum efficiency.

“Despite being new to the team and having recently relocated, Pamela was able to quickly put a robust, easy-to-use system in place that would not only benefit our business but also speed up payments for our community of [number] farmers.

“When I was first made aware of the title for this award Pamela’s name sprang forward. She is just that, a rising star.”

As part of her prize Pamela will receive a place to study on the IGD’s Postgraduate Certificate in Food and Grocery Industry Management course.

Pamela said: “As the business continues to grow, my task will be to ensure that we always have the most efficient systems and procedures in place. Securing a place on the IGD course will be ideal – giving me an opportunity to learn more about areas such as consumer research, marketing and HR where I have limited hands-on experience.”

Joanne Denney-Finch, chief executive of IGD said: “Pamela embodies the passion and drive needed to succeed in today’s fast-moving and demanding food industry. We are delighted to welcome her onto the postgraduate course.”

Chester-based Meadow Foods is the UK’s largest supplier of dairy ingredients to the food and drink industry.
