Meadow Foods invests in new butter warehouse

Meadow Foods the UK’s largest supplier of dairy ingredients to the food and drink industry, is investing £0.5m in a new state-of-the-art butter warehouse at its Chester creamery.

The 650 tonne capacity temperature-controlled warehouse, which will be fully operational from this month, will enable Meadow Foods to store finished products on-site for the first time, rather than using rented storage facilities in Whitchurch. The move will cut costs for the business – enabling Meadow Foods to continue returning a market-leading price to its farmers. It will also reduce the business’ environmental impact – cutting more than 43,000 road miles each year.

Meadow Foods, which is the UK’s largest independent supplier of butter, produces more than 15,000 tonnes of butter each year. This is supplied to leading food manufacturers including Premier, Northern Foods and Nestle for use in everything from cakes, biscuits and ready meals to sauces, soups and pastries.

The butter warehouse is the first step in a major capital investment programme for Meadow Foods, which will create new jobs at the business’ Chester creamery and enable Meadow Foods to increase the volume of milk it processes by a further 300m litres.

Paul Deakin, managing director of Meadow Foods, explains: “We’ve seen demand from food manufacturing customers increase dramatically over recent years. This trend looks set to continue. Volatility in the global milk markets is driving many manufacturers to secure their supply of quality milk.

“We’re already stepping up farmer recruitment in Cheshire, Cumbria and North Wales and by investing in our manufacturing sites, we can ensure that Meadow Foods is ideally placed to meet demand.”

Meadow Foods handles more than 400m litres of milk per year from a network of 400 farmers nationwide. To find out more about supplying Meadow Foods contact Jim Bebb on 07919 118026.
