Olympic gold medalist lends support to charity fundraisers in Manchester

Olympic Gold Medalist and member of the Team GB cycling squad Ed Clancy took time out of his busy training schedule to lend his support to Manchester families taking part in the First Mini Monster Challenge.

The family running and cycling event, organised by local bus operator First in Manchester, will be held at Phillips Park, Gorton on Sunday June 28 to raise money for Save the Children.

Ed said: “The First Mini Monster sounds like a great event. It’s important that people are encouraged to be more active and take regular exercise, and for me it’s particularly pleasing to see an event that encourages people to cycle.

“Phillips Park is a great venue – I regularly train round the park given it’s so close to the Velodrome – and the course allows almost anyone to take part.”

Manchester is one of five cities throughout the UK to host a First Mini Monster Challenge - Aberdeen and Glasgow have already staged an event, while Leeds and Bristol will host one shortly.

Two races will take place on the day of the Manchester event, both for teams of four. In the Family and Friends Race, competitors tackle two 1.5km run and two 5km bike sections completed in a relay, while the Adult Race involves two 3km runs and two 10km bike sections.

Ed had some useful pointers for anyone taking part in the relay challenge.

“It’s a good idea to get some training in prior to the big day, especially if you’re not used to regular exercise. Since this is a team event, you could always make training more fun by doing it together – that way you can cheer each other on.

“It’s really important that you warm up thoroughly before the race with a few stretches so that you don’t injure yourself. It’s tempting to speed off the moment the klaxon sounds, but you should start off steadily to conserve your energy, and it’s a good idea to take an isotonic drink or bottle of water to sip as you go along.”

He continued: “Take things at your own pace and don’t push yourself too hard – it’s not a race and the important thing is that you try your best. Afterwards, treat yourself to a meal including both carbohydrates and protein to help your body recover, and drink plenty of fluids to replace all that sweat!”

Andrew Wright, Revenue & Marketing Manager for First in Manchester, said; “We’re sure that Ed’s tips will be a great help to anyone looking to take part in the Mini Monster event. The marketing and directors team at First in Manchester will be taking part as always, so hopefully his pointers will help us to shave vital seconds off our time this year.”

The event kicks off at 10am with the Family and Friends race. The Adult Race starts at 11.30am, and entry is just £5 per person, with 25% of the entrance fee donated to Save The Children. All participants will receive a t-shirt and a medal.
