Oldham and Bury go head to head in bus survey

People in Oldham and Bury have gone head to head in a survey to find out what the towns think of each other as they are linked directly by bus for the first time in six years.

In the survey carried out by bus operator First to mark its new 58 service between Oldham and Bury, 68 per cent of people interviewed from Oldham said they visit Bury at least once a month compared to 60 per cent of people from Bury who said they visit Oldham at least once a month.

Primark and Debenhams were voted as Oldham’s best attractions with a total of 56 per cent of the Bury peoples’ votes and the World Famous Bury Market was chosen as Bury’s best attraction by 62 per cent of the Oldham voters.

Linda Davies, marketing manager for First Manchester, said: “We wanted to do something to signify the fact that Oldham and Bury are directly linked by a bus service for the first time in six years, and our survey was a fun way of finding out what the towns have to offer each other.

“The results revealed that both towns have their own unique attractions and are a popular destination for visitors. We hope our new bus route will make it easier for people to travel between the two towns as well as encouraging motorists to try the bus instead of driving.”

In recognition of the survey results, First presented certificates to Andrew Heyes, manager of Bury Markets and Craig Wood, store manager at Primark in Oldham for being the towns’ top attractions.

Andrew Heyes, manager of Bury Markets said: “It’s great that the Market has been recognised as Bury’s top attraction. We’re one of the largest markets in the country and receive around 250,000 shoppers each week thanks to our huge range of traditional stalls. We pride ourselves on providing a safe environment for shopping and socialising”.

Craig Wood, store manager at Primark said: “Primark is delighted to be voted one of Oldham’s top attractions and receive this certificate. We look forward to welcoming new customers from Bury who can now take advantage of the direct bus service from Bury to Oldham.”

The 58 service runs between Rochdale, Oldham, Middleton and Bury and operates every half hour, Monday to Saturday daytime.

First in Manchester, which carries approximately 100 million passengers each year and operates 800 buses, is committed to improving transport services for the people of Greater Manchester as well as protecting the environment.
