Green buses launch in Oldham
Oldham passengers are being given the chance to travel in style and do their bit for the planet as First Manchester launches 16 of the world’s most environmentally friendly buses.
The state-of-the-art double deck buses, which meet the highest European environmental standards, replace First’s existing single deck buses and are now working on the 180-184 route running between Greenfield, Manchester and Huddersfield.
Featuring an eye-catching design of butterflies and wildlife, inspired by picturesque scenery along the route, the buses meet the latest European exhaust emission standards and run on a bio-diesel fuel mix.
First Manchester’s network director Simon Bennett said: “A lot of work behind the scenes with bus manufacturers and industry experts has gone into creating these vehicles. Each one has been fitted with the latest spec engines and uses cleaner fuels, helping to reduce the levels of CO2 emissions.
“We hope the launch of these new super eco-buses will encourage more motorists to consider public transport as a safe, sustainable, reliable and cost effective alternative to the car.”
Passengers will be able to travel in style and safety as the buses feature 34 extra seats, more luggage space, on-board CCTV cameras and the ability to lower to kerb level at every stop making access easier for elderly passengers, wheelchair users and people with pushchairs.
Simon added: “Our investment in this new fleet shows our serious commitment to improving our transport services for the people of Greater Manchester as well as protecting the environment.”
Passengers can try the new buses for free by attending the launch on Saturday 25 October from 10am at the Market Place in Oldham town centre, near Yorkshire Building Society, where they can pick up an information leaflet which includes a Free Ride voucher.*
The 180-184 services operate at least every 10 minutes, from 5.30am to 10.50pm, Monday to Friday, 6.29am to 10.50pm on Saturdays and 7.53am to 10.20pm on a Sunday.
First Manchester, which carries approximately 100 million passengers each year and operates 900 buses, has also introduced cleaner fuels to all other buses in its fleet.
*There are a limited number of Free Ride vouchers available and they will be given out on a first-come first-served basis.
