Green light for Chetham's development

Manchester City Council has granted detailed planning consent for the 100,000 sq ft new school building for Chetham’s School of Music.

Permission was also granted for a wider masterplan proposal that will include plans to unmask and create new public access to the English-speaking world’s oldest public library, Chetham’s Library, has also been given the green light.

The scheme, which is being project managed by property consultants Drivers Jonas LLP, will create new state-of-the-art facilities incorporating music and academic teaching areas, music practice rooms and performance areas as well as a high specification 350-seat concert hall.

The enabling works package is currently out to tender, with works scheduled for commencement in September 2009. The main contractor is expected to be appointed in the New Year to construct the estimated £23 million scheme.

A recent report by specialist tourist consultants Locum said that the new Chetham’s - positioned at the heart of a new Manchester ‘Medieval Quarter’ - could help generate an estimated £6 million a year for the city region.

Designs for the new facilities have been produced by Manchester based architects practice Stephenson Bell who were assisted by the Drivers Jonas’ planning team with the submission.

Steve Jordan, partner from Drivers Jonas team, stated: “After many years of planning and fund raising, we are imminently approaching the construction phase of the project and we hope to see the enabling works beginning on site by September.

“The re-developed school will deliver enormous value not just to its students but to the city as a whole, sitting at the heart of an historic area surrounding Victoria Station.”

Claire Hickman, head of Chetham’s School of Music, said: “This is an important milestone in a groundbreaking scheme that will create truly world class teaching and concert hall facilities.

“Though its completion is some time away, our vision is now fully on track and we look forward to seeing this famous school transform.”
