Sutton family win national pub awards

A family from Sutton, who’ve more than doubled sales at their pub despite the credit crunch, are being recognised nationally by leading pub company Admiral Taverns.

Neal, Zoe and their mum Poppy Zarkovic run The Railway pub on Station Way and have been chosen from over 2,000 landlords nationwide to receive an Admiral Taverns Achievement Award.

Since taking on The Railway in November 2007, the family have increased sales by more than 100% after revamping the pub, introducing live music and themed nights and tempting back old customers like the golf society.

Neal Zarkovic (26), who worked part time in pubs whilst studying at College, said: “My sister, mum and I work well as a team because we all contribute different skills and ideas to the pub. Zoe has good business sense and understands how to market the pub because she previously worked in PR. When our mum’s not working as a part time teacher she helps to dress the pub and keeps it looking nice. Meanwhile I am the people person who loves talking and getting to know customers.

“Running a pub is something we all wanted to do but never thought it would actually happen or that we’d be such a success. We have tried to recreate a traditional, friendly atmosphere with a good choice of drinks and entertainment; ultimately, a venue that appeals to all generations.”

Admiral Taverns – the UK’s largest independent operator of tenanted and leased pubs – introduced Achievement Awards to help recognise landlords, like the Zarkovics, who have shown best practice and made a positive impact on their pub.

Kirk Parmenter, business development manager for Admiral Taverns, said: “This family are a great role model for anyone who’s ever wanted to run a pub. They work well as a team and share a passion for pubs which is clear when you walk through the door of The Railway.

“We’re always looking for people with the skills and personality to run a pub and urge anyone who’s interested to attend our recruitment event which takes place on Thursday 25 June at West Ham United’s ground between 11.30am and 5.30am.”

Admiral Taverns is hosting an event at West Ham’s Boleyn Ground to help people find out more about the pub industry and what it takes to be a landlord. For more information, contact Admiral Taverns’ recruitment team on 0845 070 8950 or visit the website.
