Liverpool landlord's half lifetime in the pub trade
A Liverpool landlord, who has accumulated over half a lifetime’s worth of experience in the pub trade, is encouraging anyone thinking about crossing sides of the bar to take the plunge.
Margaret Munro (48), who has been at The Globe pub on Park Road, Toxteth, for the past 12 years, is being recognised by pub company Admiral Taverns as one of its best performing publicans.
Margaret’s family have worked in Liverpool pubs for many generations, and she’s used her years of experience in the trade to develop The Globe into a hugely popular community local.
Margaret said: “My grandmother and my parents both owned pubs so I’ve been behind the bar since I was two. I learned the ropes by working in the family’s pubs throughout the years, but I always hoped that one day I would be able to run my own.
“I knew The Globe well as it’s in the area of the city that I’m originally from. When I noticed that it had become available, I jumped at the chance to take it on.”
Margaret has established the pub at the heart of Toxteth, hosting summer barbeques and regular fundraising events for local charities, and has a number of loyal regular who’ve kept the tills ringing throughout recent years.
In fact, business is going so well that Margaret has recently taken on another Admiral Taverns pub - The Royal Oak, which is located just around the corner from The Globe on Warwick Street.
Margaret said: “Running the two pubs will certainly be a challenge, but I’m looking forward to making my mark on The Royal Oak.
“I’ve found that the most important thing when it comes to being a landlord is to do the know the basics, keep track of what your customers want and make the effort to keep things fresh and interesting – it’s certainly served me well.”
Colin Bennett, business development manager for Admiral Taverns, said: “Margaret is a great role model for anyone who’s ever wanted to run a pub. Her years of experience in the pub trade mean that she’s not only been able to easily ride out the current economic crisis, but actually expand her ambitions to incorporate a second pub.
“There are plenty of pubs like The Globe that are trading extremely well and many vacant venues that offer fantastic opportunities for landlords who are willing to adapt or try something new.”
Admiral Taverns have a number of pubs available in the Liverpool area. For more information about running a pub, contact Admiral Taverns’ recruitment team on 0845 070 8950 or visit www.admiraltaverns.com
