Landlady uses luck of the Irish at award winning pub
A landlady from Wincester who has transformed her pub into a haven for creative and artistic locals is being recognised by leading pub company Admiral Taverns.
Janet Theodore of the Hyde Tavern on Hyde Street has been chosen from over 2,000 landlords nationwide to receive an Admiral Taverns Achievement Award.
Janet, who has been at the pub since August 2008, has made a conscious decision to create a unique creative atmosphere at the Hyde Tavern.
Janet said: “I’ve been to Ireland many times and have always been struck by how pubs there are very much the focus of the community.
“I decided to apply some of the ideas I saw in Ireland to my own pub. We host a book reading club, poetry readings, writers’ workshops and monthly quizzes, and local Drama students regularly put on performances at the pub.
“While we don’t serve food, we invite customers to bring in their own for a charge of £1 per plate, which has worked really well. Plus we have no TV or music playing here, which creates the perfect atmosphere for these sorts of groups to meet and share artistic ideas.”
Thanks to her innovative approach to running her pub, Janet has seen a 60% increase in drinks sales at the pub and has been able to reduce the amount of hours she works in her day time job as a teacher.
Janet continued: “We’ve plenty more events to come –we’ll be running a variety of happenings to coincide with the Hyde900 celebrations, and are planning another BBQ and beer festival in June.
“I really enjoy running the Hyde Tavern and am delighted to have received this award.”
Admiral Taverns – the UK’s largest independent operator of tenanted and leased pubs – introduced Achievement Awards to help recognise landlords like Janet who have shown best practice and made a positive impact on their pub.
Ged Macken, business development manager for Admiral Taverns, said: “Janet is a fantastic role model for anyone who’s ever wanted to run a pub. Her unique approach to running the Hyde Tavern has established the pub as a real creative hub as well as boosting her sales.
“We are always on the look out for people who have the personality and drive to run a successful pub and have a number of available venues in the area. To find out more, contact our recruitment team on 0845 070 8950 or visit www.admiraltaverns.co.uk.”
