Harlow pub boosted by £60k transformation

A Harlow pub has been given a new lease of life thanks to a major £60,000 investment by pub company Admiral Taverns.

The popular Purple Emperor pub on Momples Road has been redecorated throughout, with the front of the pub getting a revamp too. The garden area has also been extended to accommodate twice as many customers.

Martin Haines, who has been running the pub with his wife Susan, daughter Sally and her husband Jamie since the end of 2008, is delighted with the results.

Martin said: “We have invested some of our own money in improving the pub but we could only afford to scratch the surface when it came to all the work that needed doing, so the investment from Admiral has been of huge benefit.”

Martin is relatively new to the pub trade but has been familiar with the Purple Emperor for many years.

Martin said: “I actually used to live next door to the pub when I was young, and had been popping in for a drink every now and again for many years. When I found out that Admiral was looking for a new landlord, I jumped at the chance to take the pub on.”

The Purple Emperor is particularly well known for its monthly music quiz, which has raised over £5,000 for charity in the last two years, alongside numerous other fundraising events.

The pub, which also regularly hosts gigs with existing bands and upcoming bands, celebrated the refurbishment with a festive party on Tuesday 21 December.

Martin said: “We’ve endeavoured to keep the pub open as much as possible during the refurbishment work, but customers won’t be able to see the full impact that the refurbishments have had until now.

“We’d encourage as many people as possible to come along over the festive period, enjoy a drink and take a look at the finished article.”

Peter Smith, business development manager for Admiral Taverns, said: “We’re keen to support landlords like Martin and his family who have a lot of passion and enthusiasm for their pub by giving them a platform to try something new and helping them make the most of their business.

“We feel it’s important to invest in popular community pubs and ensure the right people are behind the bar. We have a number of available pubs in the area and are always on the look out for potential landlords.”
