Hackney landlord celebrates double award win

A licensee from Hackney who has transformed his pub is celebrating after winning two high profile awards in the same month.

Egil Johansen, of The Kenton on Kenton Road, has been chosen from over 2,000 landlords nationwide to receive an Admiral Taverns Achievement Award.

The landlord has also recently been named Best Newcomer of the London region in the Morning Advertiser’s Great British Pub Awards 2010.

Egil, who is originally from Norway but has lived in London for the past five years, took on The Kenton in March 2009.

Egil said: “I used to pop in for a drink at The Kenton occasionally while I was deciding what to do with my gap year, and always thought that the pub could be much nicer than it was. I never planned to become a landlord but, when the pub became available, I jumped at the chance to take it on as I thought it had great potential.”

Egil has given The Kenton a complete refit and created a welcoming and youthful feel at the pub. Customers can enjoy a varied calendar of events including movie nights, pub quizzes, jumble sales and club nights, and the back room of the pub is given over to exhibits from upcoming artists.

Egil continued: “I like to put on a wide variety of different events to ensure there’s something for everyone and that our customers always have a great time when they visit the pub.

“The pub has gone from strength to strength, and people seem to love the quirky décor and friendly atmosphere. I’ve also recently extended our beer garden, which has been really popular over the summer months.

“I’m very proud of the positive changes I’ve managed to make to the pub and am obviously delighted to have received these awards in recognition of my hard work.”

Admiral Taverns – the UK’s largest independent operator of tenanted and leased pubs – introduced Achievement Awards to help recognise landlords like Egil who have shown best practice and made a positive impact on their pub and their community.

The Great British Pub Awards recognise the most outstanding pubs from across the land, and Egil is now set to go on to compete for the Best Newcomer in the UK at the Morning Advertiser award ceremony on 9th September.

Paul Holmes, marketing communications manager at Admiral Taverns, said: “Egil is a fantastic role model for anyone who’s ever wanted to run a pub. His hard work at The Kenton has transformed it into a buzzing, friendly pub. He should be very proud of his achievements and these recent award wins.

“We are always on the look out for people who have the personality and drive to run a successful pub and have a number of available venues in the area. To find out more, contact our recruitment team on 0845 070 8950 or visit www.admiraltaverns.co.uk.”
