Barnsley landlord awarded top honour
A landlady from Barnsley who has transformed her pub into a popular community local and more than doubled takings is being recognised by leading pub company Admiral Taverns.
Angela Wroe (30) of the Prince of Wales on Eldon Street North has been chosen from over 2,000 landlords nationwide to receive an Admiral Taverns Achievement Award.
Angela, whose parents were landlords of the pub 12 years ago, took over the Prince of Wales in July last year.
Angela said: “I’ve lived in this area all my life and have worked in various pubs and clubs during that time.
“Obviously, I was already very familiar with the Prince of Wales because of the fact that my parents used to run it. When it became available last year, I jumped at the chance to take it on.”
Angela has redecorated and refurbished the bar area and has also made improvements to the outside of the pub with the addition of new outdoor furniture and a smoking shelter.
The pub regularly hosts community events and parties and also has its own darts team, with plans to introduce a pool team as well in the coming months.
Angela said: “My parents often come in to help me out, and have given me lots of valuable advice on how to run a successful pub.
“I’ve really enjoyed making my mark on the Prince of Wales and am delighted to have received this award.”
Admiral Taverns – the UK’s largest independent operator of tenanted and leased pubs – introduced Achievement Awards to help recognise landlords, like Angela who have shown best practice and made a positive impact on their pub.
Martyn Beal, business development manager for Admiral Taverns, said: “Angela is a great role model for anyone who’s ever wanted to run a pub. Her years of experience in the trade have served her well in her work at the Prince of Wales and she should be extremely proud of her achievement.
“We are always on the look out for people who have the personality and drive to run a successful pub and have a number of available venues in the area. To find out more, contact our recruitment team on 0845 070 8950 or visit www.admiraltaverns.co.uk.”
